Ten years ago, Peña’s wife, Ruth, was killed in a hit-and-run accident. She was left to bleed out in the arms of her husband and young daughter, Eva, as the driver fled the scene. Peña shows Álex a keychain he has kept all these years, with one word on it: "Avalon, California". As the camera pans to a horrified Álex, the implication is clear: Mayka and Álex were the couple who fled the scene of Ruth Peña's accident and left her to die.
