While NetInstall is designed to preserve the Software ID, some edge cases (such as changes in the underlying storage controller or disk geometry) can still cause a change. In such cases, a replacement key is the only solution.

Do not use third-party partition managers or Linux live CDs to format a RouterOS drive, as this will change the Software ID irreversibly.

Trying to bypass the Software ID mechanism is not only illegal but also dangerous. Many "keygen" or "patch" tools for MikroTik contain rootkits that turn your router into a spam botnet.
